Job Health Update + Powerade Duathlon Series Leg 1 April 5, 2011

I was supposed to meet up with Job’s dad (Thristian) tonight to get some shirts and baller ID’s, but we had to move it to another day. He and his wife informed me, though, that Baby Job isn’t doing so well. He was confined in the hospital last week and they’re hoping it won’t cause any delays in his operation. I haven’t been able to get details yet as his parents have been busy with work and preparations for the operation. I’ll know more when I meet up with them on Sunday, which leads me to my next plug.

There will be a Hope for Job booth at the 2011 Search for Rachell Allen Image Model Finals Night on Sunday, April 10, 6pm at the Gateway Suites, Gateway Mall, Araneta Center. I’m not quite sure if the booth will be inside or outside the event area. But just in case, tickets are being sold for Php 120. Swt and Thristian (Job’s parents) will be selling their shirts and baller ID’s there.


Last Sunday, I joined my first ever duathlon. It was a sprint duathlon (6k run – 30k bike – 3k run) sponsored by Powerade and was held in Filinvest, Alabang. I’d heard that the course would be very technical, featuring lots of turns and some uphill work which would eventually take its toll after a few loops. I haven’t really been riding much. I only started riding last year when I bought Agnes, my Scott Contessa bike, which I bought from The Brick Multisport Store in Mckinley Hill. The few long rides I had, I would usually rest at the 20km mark and I still wasn’t comfortable getting my water bottle from the bottom tube. To boost my confidence, I decided to buy the Profile Design Aquacell. It’s basically a water bottle that you attach to your aerobars. It makes hydration so much more convenient and it literally saved me on race day.

As soon as we arrived in Alabang, we went straight to the transition area to get my things ready. It just so happened that my bike was stationed in front of Leroy’s (part owner of The Brick) bike. We chatted for a bit and he handed me a Bodivance tester bottle. Bodivance is a sort of lotion that you apply thinly to speed up your warm up and recovery time. I applied a little and was skeptic at first. But hey, it was free and who am I to say no to free stuff? ;P A few minutes later, I felt something different. Minutes before a race, I’m usually stiff from nervousness. It was different this time. I felt kind of loose. I was surprised. I guess that stuff really does work!

So anyway, I wasn’t really aiming for a PR considering this was my first duathlon. I computed my run and bike times and gave myself a generous sub-2:30 target. 2:24 at most. The race started and off we went. Carlo (TMM-Timex and SBR creator) was with me at the start, but he left me after a few meters. I just kept thinking that I should focus on racing my own race – that I shouldn’t get distracted. So I kept my pace and soon found a pair of guys that were running at almost the same pace as I was. I made sure not to push too hard on the run so I could conserve my energy for the bike leg. When I entered the transition area, I clocked in at 38 minutes. I think that means that I have a new 5k PR. My last 5k was from the Endure-Blackberry Aquathlon where I hit 34 minutes. Before that, my last 5k was in November 2010. So anyway, off I went to do the bike.

I took it slow on the first loop just to get a feel of the course. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to sustain the uphills on the big ring, so on my second loop, I switched to the small ring. The uphills were much easier to get through cos of that. On the third loop, I started to cramp a little bit on my right foot. It went away after the hills, but would come out again once I started going uphill. By the fifth loop, my calves were already cramping. I took it easy on the flats to let my calves rest, only to have them cramp up again when I’d go uphill. I was too scared to get my Endurolytes from my back pocket and didn’t want to stop just to get them. Instead, I took larger sips from my Aquacell, keeping in mind that I needed electrolytes. This helped keep the cramps manageable.

I thought the cramps were gone by the end of the sixth loop, but as soon as I uncleated my right foot, it came back with a vengeance. I almost thought I wouldn’t be able to get off the bike because I couldn’t move my right leg because of the pain. It subsided short enough to let me get off the bike and change back into running shoes, but I couldn’t find the strength to run anymore. I tried shuffling for a while, but I would end up walking after a few seconds. Mark was nice enough to do the last 3k with me. He handed me glasses of water which I kept pouring over my head and encouraged me to run. He distracted me by talking about the race and the people who had already finished. After a while, I was able to run/jog longer and walk less. Carlo joined me on the last few meters. Most of the athletes were already done, so there weren’t many of us left running. Carlo told me to forget sprinting to the end and just maintain my pace, but I picked up the pace towards the end anyway. HeheHe. Crossing the finish line was kinda hazy, but I remember being handed a finisher’s medal. That was awesome. Then all the finishers were also given a shirt which said, “duathlete” at the back. Not bad at all for my first duathlon. 🙂 Afterwards, we headed over to The Starting Line in Westgate where Leo and Raoul (part owners) treated SBR forumers to post-race pizza and softdrinks. Quite a number of us were present at that race, so we took advantage of the opportunity for a photo op.

All in all, I’m pretty ecstatic for having finished the duathlon. Never in a million years did I imagine I would finish a duathlon. Kudos to the organizers for putting up an awesome race. Of course it has its kinks, but for a first timer like me, it was quite the experience.
